Every fall, the same thing happens across the Cape. Second homeowners head south, and a car gets left behind in a garage for three to six months. Most of what goes wrong in that window is preventable — but only if you know what to actually check.
The Battery Goes First
A modern car's electronics draw a small, constant current even when it's off — alarm systems, computer modules, clocks. Over months with no driving, that slow drain is enough to leave you with a dead battery by spring, sometimes one that's been damaged badly enough it won't hold a charge again.
Tires Flat-Spot
A tire sitting in the same position for months develops a flat spot where the weight of the car has been resting. On a cold morning, that can mean a rough, thumping ride until the tire warms up and rounds back out — and on a longer sit, the flat spot can become permanent.
Engine Seals Dry Out
Rubber seals and gaskets stay supple because oil and other fluids keep circulating and coating them. A car that never runs means those seals sit dry for months, and dried-out seals are exactly what starts a slow oil leak once the car is finally driven again.
Fuel Goes Bad
Gasoline degrades over time, especially the ethanol-blended fuel sold almost everywhere today. Old fuel can gum up injectors and make a car hard to start, or run rough once it does.
Rodents Move In
A quiet garage with a warm engine bay is an attractive place for mice over a Cape Cod winter. They chew wiring, nest in air filters, and can cause real damage that isn't obvious until something stops working.
Why "Starting It Once a Month" Isn't Enough
This is the part most people get wrong. Starting the car and letting it idle for a few minutes does almost nothing — the engine needs to actually reach full operating temperature to burn off condensation and properly recirculate fluid through those seals. A cold start-and-stop can do more harm than good, since it adds moisture to the exhaust and oil without ever burning it off.
A real check means the engine runs long enough to get warm, the tires get checked, the battery gets verified, and someone actually looks for signs of a problem while they're there.
