"What's my car worth?" is the question I get more than any other. The honest answer: it depends on who's buying it, how you're selling it, and what the market looks like right now. Here's how to actually figure it out.
Why KBB and Edmunds Are a Starting Point, Not an Answer
Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds are useful but limited. They're based on national averages, often a few months behind the actual market, and don't account for local demand. A 4WD truck in North Falmouth, Massachusetts is worth more than the same truck in Phoenix — because the buyer pool here needs it more. KBB doesn't know that.
Use KBB and Edmunds to understand the range, not to set your price.
The Tools That Actually Reflect Real Market Value
- Carvana and CarMax instant offers. Get both. They take two minutes and represent what a real buyer will pay you today. They're your floor.
- CarGurus and AutoTrader active listings. Search your exact year, make, model, trim, and mileage in your region. What are similar cars actually listed for? That's your ceiling.
- Facebook Marketplace sold listings. Underused but powerful. You can see what cars actually sold for — not just what people asked, but what someone actually paid.
- Model-specific communities. For classics and collector cars, the forums and Facebook groups for that specific vehicle are where you'll find the most accurate pricing.
The Condition Multiplier
Every pricing tool asks about condition — and most sellers overestimate. Simple honest framework: if you'd be embarrassed to show it to a detail-oriented buyer without cleaning it up first, it's "fair" condition, not "good." The difference is typically $1,500-$3,000.
A $200 detail job often returns $1,000+ in selling price. It's almost always worth doing.
What PCAP Does
When someone comes for a valuation, we pull all of the above — Carvana, CarMax, active listings, recent sales — and put them in front of you so you can see the full picture. We don't just give you a number. We show you the data and explain what it means for your situation. That process takes 24-48 hours and is completely free.
