What Is Car Consignment? (And Why Cape Cod Sellers Are Using It)

Most people know two ways to sell a car: trade it in, or sell it yourself. Consignment is the third option — and once people understand it, they usually wish they'd known about it sooner.

How Car Consignment Works

When you consign a car, you hire someone to sell it for you. You keep ownership until it sells. The consignment service handles everything: the valuation, the inspection, the photography, the listing, the buyer inquiries, the test drives, the negotiation, and the paperwork. When the car sells, you get paid.

At PCAP we charge a flat fee at closing — you only pay when your car actually sells. No upfront costs, no monthly listing fees, no surprises.

Why It Beats a Private Sale for Most People

A private sale sounds great until you're actually doing it. Writing a listing, taking photos, fielding lowball offers at 10pm, scheduling test drives with people who don't show up, figuring out safe payment — it adds up to a lot of time and stress.

Consignment handles all of that while still getting you private-sale pricing. Most of my clients check in every week or so. A few don't hear from me until I'm calling to say their car sold.

The Inspection Is the Key

Every vehicle we take gets a 145-point physical inspection before it goes live. We document everything — what's in great shape, what needs attention, what the buyer should know. That report goes on the listing.

This sounds like it might hurt you as a seller. It doesn't. Buyers with the full picture upfront are better buyers. Less likely to back out, less likely to haggle aggressively, more likely to close quickly. Transparency is a selling tool, not a liability.

Is Consignment Right for You?

Consignment works best when you have a vehicle where the difference between a dealer offer and a real buyer matters. It also works best when you have a little time — our typical vehicle sells in 3-6 weeks. If you need the money tomorrow, consignment might not be the right fit. We'll tell you that honestly and help you think through your options.
